Lead Shot
0.8 to 1.45mm rounds. This shot is not spherical.
Not suitable for gun shot.
For diving weights, ballasting models and other applications.
145 cubic centimeters weighs approximately 1Kg
Lead shot density = 6.9g/cc at 61/39 lead shot/air space ratio. (Solid lead density = 11.34g/cc)
For divers
The lead will loose its shiny appearance as it oxidises leaving a grey protective surface.
Somebody suggested that one way to bag the lead shot was to put it in the leg of a pair of old tights.
For model makers
To glue in place, coat the shot with varnish by adding a small quantity to the bag and shaking.
Coat the top of the shot with Plastic Padding to stop water getting in. Use a thin plastic sheet to level the surface, then remove when dry.
To increase density, fill the air space with resin.
Fill "Blue Tac" with shot to balance aircraft models.
Steel Shot
Steel Shot is a fine grit used for shot blasting, similar to a fine sand.
For ballasting models and other applications.
Not recommended for diving weights as it is too fine and will rust if not protected.
238 cubic centimeters weighs approximately 1Kg
Steel shot grit density = 4.2g/cc at 60/40 steel shot/air space ratio. (Solid steel density = 7.85g/cc)
This steel grit is generally clean but with a few lumps of sand and metal. It must be protected from rusting by applying a rust proofing coating such as varnish, this will also glue it together. Air tight container will stop the oxygen from oxidising the surface.
